Although it looked complicated, the Chinese social network TechTom did what dozens of apps had tried for many years without success: defeating Mark Zuckerberg to become the world’s most downloaded app.
Although TikTok has been competing head-to-head with WhatsApp and Facebook for years for this title, it wasn’t until 2020 that the app was crowned as the most downloaded app on the planet. This is according to the latest Nikkei Asia report.
The company revealed that in China and the United States, the app owned by Byte Dance was crowned as the most downloaded. In the case of Japan, TikTok remained in third place behind LINE and Instagram.
In the case of the entire Asian continent, TikTok is still the second most downloaded application after Facebook.
What is remarkable is that in 2019, TikTok was the fourth most downloaded app on the planet, which is why it had the most significant growth in the top 10 most downloaded apps in the world, advancing three positions in just one year.
The Nikkei Asia Index states that Facebook and WhatsApp have remained exactly the same in 2019; with second and third place, respectively.
However, the biggest drop was reported for Messenger Medication, going from number one to number five in just one year. Instagram became the fourth most downloaded app in the world in 2020.
Nikkei Asia did not disclose the number of downloads for any app, however, Sensor Tower data revealed that the Chinese social network TikTok was downloaded 2.6 billion times during 2020, which is a world first. The same company reported that during the first quarter of 2021, TikTok was downloaded 315 million times again worldwide.
Other apps that have also grown exponentially in the US market are Discord and Google Duo, as Duo has been both communication and video calling channels during the COVID-19 pandemic.
