Google just surprised us, not because of the Google Pixel 6 and 6 Pro we all knew were on the way, but because of the introduction of Google Tensor: the company’s first proprietary processor for mobile phones. In this way, Big Google is catching up with manufacturers like Samsung, Huawei, and Apple who also design SoCs for their phones.
Remember that for every Pixel phone in the past, Google has switched to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors, most recently putting the mid-range Snapdragon 765 chip in the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G. So, Google Pixel 6 and 6 Pro will be the first smartphone in the series that does not have a Snapdragon processor. Let’s see what Google Tensor will look like and what it will contribute to the Pixel 6.
First of all, let’s make it clear that Google Tensor is not just a wizard. It’s actually a SoC (system on a chip) that has an integrated CPU, GPU and TPU for AI, a 5G modem, and a Titan M2 chip for security. We do not know the exact specifications of each of these components, as Google has not disclosed them yet.
Since Google does not have its own manufacturing facilities, it does not manufacture Google Tensor itself, it only designs it. Samsung is clearly the company that makes the SoC with the 5nm process. It is said to have two Cortex-A78 cores and two Cortex-A76 cores, as well as four Cortex-A55 CPU cores. It could also have an ARM Mali GPU.
What has been officially confirmed is that the main highlight of Google Tensor will be its image and video processing, as well as its voice recognition capabilities. It’s a good thing in this regard that it will allow the Pixel 6 to apply HDR to every single frame of the video and even translate audio in real time.

Google said that its Tensor chip will also allow it to introduce completely new features in computational imaging, and enhance existing ones. In addition, the SoC will have artificial intelligence and machine learning functions that will make Google Pixels learn how to use your mobile on a daily basis to optimize resources and thus improve performance.
Google has stated that its new Tensor chip is designed “for the pixel,” which clearly means that it will be exclusive to Google phones and will not be shown on any third-party Android device. In addition, the company said that Google Tensor will allow the new Pixel phones to offer experiences that no other smartphone can provide today.
Let’s not forget that Google is the main Android developer. Now with the new SoC, Google has complete control over the software and hardware of its mobile phones, allowing it to deeply integrate these two elements to deliver an experience that is superior to the competition. Something similar to what Apple does with iPhones.
It remains to be seen if Google Tensor will really be a revolution or if it will be a regular processor in the market. Samsung’s Exynos, for example, does not offer noticeable improvements to devices from these brands.
