End to end encryption is a security system that consists of blocking every message you send through the messaging app with a key, which is a key that only you and the recipient who receives the message own. This password is changed each time a message is sent, making it more difficult for other people to access the shared content.
This way, the conversation is protected by changing a code that is automatically updated, and users don’t have to do anything to use this security measure. This tool blocks all the contents of messages: texts, images, audios, documents and any other type of data that you share via chats.
As we said, only the devices of the sender and receiver of the message have the key to decrypt it. In this way, the messaging service itself cannot access the data shared by its customers. This also means that the information is protected when it is sent, but not when it is already on your mobile phone. There, it’s your responsibility to keep it private by creating a good lock code or the messaging app itself.
Messaging apps that have end-to-end encryption
End-to-end encryption is an essential security system in messaging apps, so we’re going to review which ones have this functionality and which ones don’t. Of course, using those that lack end-to-end encryption poses a risk to your personal information.
It took a long time, but WhatsApp added end-to-end encryption to their chats in April 2016. Users can see that this tool works every time they open a new chat as the following message appears: “Calls and messages sent to this chat are now secure with end-to-end encryption. ”
Users had to wait more than 5 years for WhatsApp to add end-to-end encryption to their backups as well. Thus, neither WhatsApp, Google nor any other owner of cloud storage platforms will be able to access the content of your account’s backups.
As Telegram explains on its blog, the messaging platform has two layers of secure encryption. On the other hand, it has server and client encryption that runs on chats in the cloud, both private and in groups. In addition, an additional layer of client and client encryption is used in secret Telegram chats. This means that only secret chats have end-to-end encryption.

Facebook chose the same year as WhatsApp (2016) to add end-to-end encryption to Messenger, its messaging app. Additionally, in 2021, Messenger added this security tool to calls and video calls. This way, you can now speak completely securely in this app, knowing that no one will be able to decrypt the key that protects your chats.
Signal, often touted as the most secure messaging platform, features end-to-end encryption. Without going any further, Signal was one of the first services to use this tool. In addition, this platform also provides other very important security measures for users, such as self-destruction of messages, use of a personal PIN code and image obfuscation to protect the identity of the people who appear in it.
On its website, the messaging app explains: “All audio, video, file, and instant message transmissions between Skype users are encrypted.” Additionally, Skype adds that it uses AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) to protect conversations. It also uses 256-bit maximum encryption and 1536 or 2048-bit RSA certificates to authenticate a user’s public keys during login. In short, it is a secure messaging platform for communication.
We went to the security section of the Viber website to find that the service uses end-to-end encryption in conversations and calls by default, so neither Viber nor any other user not involved in chat can access the messages. As per the app, none of the content shared in chats is kept on their servers, so you are safe at all times.
Although its security has been questioned at times, the truth is that Zoom has end-to-end encryption in meetings to protect the content shared in meetings. As we can see on the Zoom website, account owners and administrators can enable this extra layer of security for meetings, but this requires all participants to have access to the Zoom Desktop Client, mobile app, or Zoom Rooms.
Zoom uses asymmetric encryption for end-to-end encryption, and the keys are generated by the user’s devices, not by Zoom’s servers. Of course, using this layer of security assumes that some functions in meetings are deactivated, such as the ability to log in before the host, send live, register in the cloud, or vote.
Although it is not a messaging platform, Discord is used by users to chat and share virtual meetings. Unfortunately, Discord does not have end-to-end encryption for text messages, video calls, or audio. Instead, messages are encrypted when sent and stored on the service’s servers.
